Tanzania nominates Prof Mohamed Janabi for WHO Africa regional director role
If successful, Prof. Janabi would replace Dr Faustine Ndugulile, who passed away on November 27, 2024, while receiving treatment in India. Dr Ndugulile was set to take over the role in March 2025.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced the nomination of Prof. Mohamed Janabi as Tanzania's candidate for the position of Regional Director for the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Region.
Speaking during a swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed officials in Tunguu, Zanzibar, on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, President Samia expressed confidence in Prof. Mohamed's qualifications and extensive healthcare expertise.

"Today, I am revealing a secret right here. We have reviewed many CVs; we had about five CVs from your colleagues, and we decided that yours is the one we can submit for the WHO competition. Therefore, we are preparing you for that, and when the time comes, we will submit your CV and include you in the competition. So, from now on, get ready for it," the president said.
If successful, Prof. Janabi would replace Dr Faustine Ndugulile, who passed away on November 27, 2024, while receiving treatment in India. Dr Ndugulile was set to take over the role in March 2025.
Ndugulile had been elected as the WHO Regional Director for Africa in August, succeeding Matshidiso Moeti, who has served in the role since 2015.
Ndugulile's election took place during the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, where he was chosen from among three other candidates: Boureima Hama Sambo of Niger, Richard Mihigo of Rwanda, and Ibrahima Soce Fall of Senegal.
He had not assumed office when he passed on.
Prof. Janabi currently serves as the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) and was recently appointed as the President's Advisor on Health and Medical Affairs on December 8, 2024.
This nomination highlights Tanzania's continued commitment to strengthening its role in global health leadership and contributing to the development of the WHO's Africa Region.
